3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis CNC machine application introduction

CNC is the abbreviation of Computer Numerical Control.

3-axis CNC machine:

X-axis and Y-axis are for moving products horizontally; Z-axis is generally the power axis carrying different tools. (the 3-axis machine here does not include special machine).

This kind of machine can only process one surface one time and it applies for plate parts manufacturing. For more surfaces process, manual flip over is needed.

4-axis CNC machine:

Based on 3 axis machine, one rotation axis is added, generally it is the plane 360° rotation and it can’t work at high speed. This kind of CNC machine is suitable for processing some shell parts. 

5-axis CNC machine:

It’s called turning and milling compound machine and it’s also called 5-axis double power head machining center. Besides the milling, it has the turning, drilling, tapping, straight groove, spiral groove and milling teeth, boring and other compound functions. Based on 4-axis machine, the 5th axis (usually one vertical rotation one) is added. It can achieve a clamping one time and complete all processing concept. The main advantage of 5-axis CNC machine is it can reduce the clamping cost and product scratches, more suitable for processing complex, high accuracy parts needing lots of jigs. It was firstly applied to the processing of impellers.
